Description: Very clear sepia image of Christian Metz home in Amana. This view was taken from the General Store. The entire west side of the Metz house is visible, including the attached kitchen house wing. In the far left of the photograph one can see the Amana Church. Fences, out buildings, even wash on the line are clearly visible. Back of the picture is marked "Oesterle Home Amana IA Church Background". The Oesterle family lived in the house from around the turn of the century to the present day. Image is 4 1/8 X 3 and is mounted on an embossed card that is 5 1/2 X 4 1/4. Christian Metz (1793-1867) was the leader and Werkzeug (prophet) of the Inspirationists from 1823 until his death in 1867.
Description: Later day copy print of a circa 1905 post card image of a woman in the kitchen of the Homestead Hotel. Legend on the side of the image reads "A Colony Kitchen, Homestead, Iowa." The image is 6 1/4 X 8 1/4. I know from other prints that this was actually the kitchen of the Homestead Hotel, not a kitchen house for the members. This is now Zuber's Hotel in Homestead. For years room was the main dining area of Zuber's restaurant. Lots of nice details in this picture, including a cat perched in the window.

Description: Very clear 8 X 10 print of the dredge boat on the mill race at Amana. Taken from upper level of the flour mill elevator building. Focus is sharp on the boat, less distinct on the houses in the background. This is a modern print from the original glass plate. One of a series of experimental prints that I worked with a good friend to make in the 1990s. Not historic but an interesting image none the less.
Description: The vantage point for this photograph was probably the Amana Flour Mill. The scene is looking to the west and shows the main channel of the mill race, as well as the side channel (since filled in) that led to the Calico Mill. Photograph dates from circa 1910.
Description: Probably taken from the Amana flour mill. The boat is in the foreground, at the point in the side channel where it was usually stored for the winter. This is a modern 8 X 10 print. Picture dates from circa 1910.
Description: Photograph of Amana Pharmacy before 1900 (Dentist Office, built that year, is not present in photograph). I would date this to the late 1890s, because the windmill behind the pharmacy is not visible, and we believe that it was removed in the early 1890s. Image is 3 X 4 and mounted on a gilt edged piece of card stock 4 1/8 X 5 1/8. $100.

No original markings on the reverse. I have been unable to identify the location. Image is 3 1/4 X 4 and is mounted on an embossed card that is 4 1/4 X 5 1/4.
Description: Photograph of the Graf Kitchen House- Amana, Iowa. This building was constructed in 1872 as a kitchen house serving residents of the village of Amana. It is unusual in that two walls of the structure are built of dressed stone bought from an Iowa City quarry. This kitchen was under the management of the Graf family for some time. It stands opposite the Amana Woolen Mill.

Notes
Description: Group of school boys in the apple orchard, around 1895. This is a modern 8 X 10 print from an original image made by Bertha M.H. Shambaugh around 1895. Shambaugh mainly photographed in Amana between about 1892 and her marriage in 1897. This print was probably made in the 1970s and is of good quality. About 10 school age youths are in the picture, along with two older adults, one of whom (with white chin beard) is likely Engelhardt Hecker, one of the school teachers at the time. Included are several of the distinctive Amana willow baskets.

Description: Small image, not mounted, of a horse drawn wagon in front of the Amana General Store. The Lauer Saal (original 1856 meeting house, no longer extant) is visible in the background. The dozen women, men and children seated on the wagon are clearly excursionists who have arrived by train. A row of picnic baskets is visible on the wagon, and one of the women is shading herself with a large umbrella. Charming, ca. 1900 view of early Amana visitors. 3 3/4 X 3.
Description: Interior of the weaving building at the Amana Woolen Mill marked "Factory 1899" on reverse. Image is 3.5 X 4 3/4 mounted on an embossed card that is 5.5 X 6.5. Two young men are seen standing to the left of four power looms. The drive shafts are visible on the ceiling in this very unusual early interior view of the woolen mill.
