Gestalt-O-Drama requires participants to look at them- selves as honestly and objec- tively as possible, and to see in themselves the different characters or self—images with which they identify. Sometimes an actual stage is used, with perform- ances ranging from simple spontaneous monologues and story-telling to original plays for a live, small audi- ence. Many of the dramato- logical sessions are video- taped so that people can see themselves in "videother- apy." The im- portant thing is that a spirit of fun and levity interfaces with stimulating intellectual con- tent, and all involved grow into the role of being idealists who are working together for world peace. The results of this experi- ence have been highly vis- ible, in terms of increased self-confidence, verbal skills, lessening inhibition, closer relationships and the begin- nings of overcoming stage fright. These improvements show up at the individual level. The effects are also felt on the community level. Smoother communications, greater interpersonal ease and more cooperative en- deavors are some of the manifestations of the Gestalt- O-Drama Growth Co-op The- ater and the Kerista Planetary Peace Plan. In 1980, Kerista Village launched the Gestalt-O- Rama Growth Co-op, holding regular weekly sessions in their storefront multimedia learning center in San Fran- cisco, both to further their own growth and to meet others who might want to be- come friends and join them in some capacity. Out of this experience emerged the con- cept of the Gestalt-O-Drama Growth Co-op Theater, cen- tering in on the more dra- matic parts of the Kerista Planetary Peace Plan. Over the years, it was dis- covered that this kind of open conversational inter- action had a special intensity and relevance, in that every- one's cards were on the table, and everyone involved was in it for real, no holding back. It almost felt like some kind of living room theater, with lots of humor and many great lines. This fit quite well with the fact that all the group members saw them- selves as artists of one sort or another working on self-im- provement as a method to bring about peace on Earth. Who Can Join, and How? The Gesta|t—O-Drama Growth Co-op Theater meets several times a week. A per- son does not necessarily have to be in Kerista Village to participate. On the other hand, anyone who wants to join the live-in community could only do so by first be- Your Active Membership in the GESTALT-O- DRAMA THEATER & GROWTH CO-OP Is a First Step in Working for Planetary Peace by Beginning to Work on Your Self coming an active growth co- op and theater participant. It is an ideal way to participate in the Kerista Planetary Peace Plan in which Peace Brigade members get to know each other and explore profound ideas. The Kerista Village way of life is in some ways quite radical. Community members live by a detailed social con- tract and are dedicated to the collective art form of culture sculpture. It is radical in that it leaves behind many old- fashioned and strongly con- ditioned ideas, such as ro- manticism in relationships and the unlimited accumula- tion of personal wealth. Yet in other ways it embodies uni- versal values such as stability and intimacy in relationships, love of learning and the very human desire to explore new psychosocial frontiers. It's definitely made for people who have held on to their idealism, and are searching for a holistically sane co- 3 operative way of life that will lead to lasting world peace. Background In 1971, two people met who shared in common a fan- tasy of living a Utopian exis- tence. The Utopia of their imaginations included equal- ity (no sexism or ageism or racism; equal standard of liv- ing; shared leadership and democracy), a new religious- ness, group families with multiple parenting of chil- dren, and true cooperation of all kinds. They approached this fantasy from a perspec- tive of practicality, believing ' that it was an attainable way of life. Over the course of the next ten years, the original two people grew to a group of thirteen. Through a combina- tion of high-intensity thinking and discussion, and the feed- back from real group living experience, they developed a complete structure for a new culture based upon the ideals of humor, equality, liberation and universal love. They also evolved a creative growth process (Gestalt-O-Rama) through which the discover- ies they were making in futur- istic social psychology could be applied to raising indi- vidual awareness. The ingre- dients of the experiment combined into a fantastically dynamic situation. Making “culture sculpture" their col- lective purpose in life, the group (now calling them- selves Kerista Village) evolved a comprehensive strategy for world peace, plans for post—holocaust sur- vival in the event of a third World War, new forms for family and children, and an all-art-forms type of living theater called Gesta|t-0- Drama. There is a social contract (code of accepted behavior and procedure) for the growth co-op and theater; this will be explained to you in depth and any question about it that you may have will be answered. To get involved in the Ke- rista Planetary Peace Plan, the Gestalt-O-Drama Theater and Growth Co-op, call Keris- ta Village and talk to whom- ever answers the phone. Seminars take place at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednes- days and Thursdays. New- comers are welcome! The standards exist to protect the integrity and quality of the scene; they aren’t there to repress or inhibit anyone from participating or being expressive. This includes the idea that people of good will have fundamental differences of opinion. All differences can be tol- erated and graciously discussed, even though agreement may not be reached. 3. Rationality. The introduction of conversational modes which defy logic and reason will not be toler- ated. The idea of being totally ra- tional at all times is a basic tenet of the Growth Co-op. 4. The Search for Truth through the Elimination of Contradictions. This means that we will encounter any statement that contradicts the body of premises that have already been assembled as our basic belief system, with the readiness to change any existent premise that is faulty. 5. Verbality. We are all highly verbal and dullness is seen by the members as a “sick point." Nonver- bality will be grounds for expulsion from the Growth Co-op. Dialectic and conversation are seen by us as art forms which help us to become beautiful and expressive people. RAMA GROWTH CO-OP THEATER GROWTH CO-OP STANDARDS OR BEHAVIORAL NORMS AN INTRODUCTION TO THE GESTALT-0-RAMA GROWTH CO-OP AND THE GESTALT-O- 6. Equality. This means that we will each have one vote. We will share leadership, without one per- son being recognized by the others as the leader. Each of us will do everything possible to study the concepts of equality as being differ- ent from sameness. Each of us is unique and a sovereign individual. We wish to remove any special privileges that attach to any person and attempt to be as equal as possible within our ability to under- stand the meaning and significance of the idea of equality. 7. Non-Sexism. Both sexes are re- garded and treated as totally equal in every way. 8. Non-Ageism. Any adult of any age is welcome as a member. 9. Non-Racism. Any adult of any race is welcome as a member. 10. Non—CIassism. Every human adult is equal to any other. 11. Participatory Democracy. We vote on everything. The majority of votes will prevail. Each member of The Gestalt-O-Rama Growth Co—op has one vote. Visitors may vote on matters that affect them, but cannot do more than advise on serious Growth Co—op matters. 12. Accountability. This means that any reasonable question will be answered by a participant. The phrase, ‘‘I don’t want to talk about it,” will not be accepted. However, if the individual feels that the subject matter is‘too personal the issue can be brought to the group for a decid- ing vote. The principle of being open and honest is basic to the idea of a “gestalt" environment that benefits all. 13. No Duplicity. Nothing is said about a person when s/he isn't there that isn’t said directly to the person and made known to her/ him. This means no gossip and no secret statements or opinions. 14. Non—Alienation. This means that we are not into “bad-mouth- ing” our government or our institu- tions. Critical discussion and nega- tive observations can be introduced into the conversation, but not with bitterness and acrimony. We aren’t hateful people. Raw hatefulness is seen by us as a “sick point.” Other sick points include bigotry, social intolerance, prejudice, etc. 15. Active, Intentional Friendship Development. We all wish to make as many new friends as possible. It's important to us to work on building new friendships. Persons who aren't seeking new friends aren't welcome to participate in the Growth Co-op. New friends who fall into clearly defined relationship rings will help us fill out our Friend- ship Context Model. This is one of the main models that we use in the Gesta|t—O-Rama Growth Co-op as a basic tenet of sane living. 16. Non-Interference in Art. This means that any member of the Growth Co-op can originate an art project or an intellectual or sports activity. For example, a member might originate a theater project such as an erotic motion picture or a videotape series about “sick points" or “pleasure centers." The project originator has the right to state as clearly as possible what the criteria for participation in the proj- ect are and to evaluate whether people meet the criteria. No one who is not suited to participate, based upon the judgment of the project originator, can force her/his way into the project. The person who doesn't fit in has the right to originate a different project. but doesn’t have the right to interfere with the originator of the project that s/he doesn't fit into. This is a basic protection to all members. 17. Graceful Distancing. This means that any individual who doesn't agree to abide by these basic behavioral norms or stan- dards will be asked to leave the premises. Furthermore, one or more members of the Growth Co- op who have entered the Growth Co-op fraudulently. that is, stating that they would abide by the stan- dards and then having no intention to abide by the standards, can be voted out by majority vote of the Voting Members of the Gesta|t-O- Rama Growth Co-op in good stand- ing. All participants agree to grace- fully distance if they are charged with an infraction of the standards and voted out by majority rule of the Voting Members. Now, let us make it crystal clear that the purpose of the standards and the behavioral norms is to pro- tect the participants from being ripped off and having their evenings spoiled by persons who simply haven't any intention of working on themselves within the context of “friendship development" as stated by the Gestalt-O-Rama Growth Co- op. All of us who have become friends have started out as total strangers. We want intellectual vigor and the excitement of theatri- cal wit and good humor in our lives. We want many friends in many cate- gories. ln order to get what we want we have to know clearly what we want and how to get it. We require constancy of purpose. The way to know what we want is to talk it out. As the founding char- ter group retains ultimate protec- tion under the standard of Non- Interference in Art, the charter group wishes to spread the leader- ship out to include all participants. The need for a social contract is obvious to any of us who have been involved in making the Gesta|t—0- Flama Growth Co-op a success. We have worked hard to create a social scene which is vigorous, unique, exciting and quite different from any other type of scene. The types of people who come are rational and intelligent. Dull types are weeded out by the G-O-R process. They are looking for a different kind of enter- tainment than what we offer. We exist to serve a special constituency with integrity. No one has the right of intrusion into our space who doesn’t agree with this set of standards which we have made as clear as possible and which we intend to uphold. The standards protect us from medioc- rity which we see as the enemy of intellectual vigor and the pursuit of happiness. Outside of our dedica- tion to responsible hedonism and economic equality we intend to mind our own business as we live out our lives peacefully and with good will to all. Growth Co-op meetings take place on Tuesday. Wednesday and Thursday nights at 8 pm., at 543 Frederick St. in San Francisco. What is the utopian psychology definition of “gestalt”? A. “Gestalt" is used to indicate a complete situation as opposed to isolated parts of the situation. For instance, a situation in which two people meet each other and start a relationship is made up of much more than the obvious physical fact of their coming face to face. The gestalt interpretation of this situation would take into account such things as how the people met. where they met. what their individual intentions are. both conscious and subconscious. how they see themselves and each other. how they are each living. what other people they are currently involved with and what those involve- ments are like. what lifestyles they aspire to. what ideals they have or don't have. how they _ behave towards each other. and more. Probably of highest importance in this gestalt picture is the question of the underlying motivation of each person in the situation. This is why utopian psychology placessuch a high emphasis on future pos- sibilities: the gestalt picture is only complete when it is known where the relationship leads. In order to get beyond the surface of a given gestalt situation and find out what is really happening the “gestalt process" is used. This process enables people to see things objective- - ly instead of emotionally reacting or seeing things only as they have been conditioned to see them, In the gestaltprocess (also known as Gestalt-O—Rama) people who are friends and who think they want to develop continuing relationships with each other try to discuss all aspects of their situation. including the blocks they might have to building lasting friendships and the ideal way for such a lasting community of friends to ‘work. The process is highly verbal and all people have a duty to say what they think or feel at any time. They also must have a commitment to improving themselves if the process is to work. The purpose of the gestalt process is for each individual to become free of unhealthy habits. motives. attitudes and values and sustain a natural highness. Since this is a continuous process it goes on constantly and can only work if the underlying picture includes each person's having the desire to sustain the rela- tionships in the gestalt circle so that trust can be built. What does this mean? Intentional Our premise is that every child should be born wanted. The ideal situation is one in which the baby is planned for five years and nine months before her/his birth . .. that is, a woman finds her family situation and village support system. and then has five years to settle into these with stabil- ity, before becoming preg- nant. By the time she chooses to become preg- nant and have a child, she will have established solid, rewarding relationships with other adults who will be acting as co-parents within a family cluster, and firm friendships with others outside the family who will also be involved in educa- tional childcare at the village or U Lab‘ level. She will have comethroughacomprehen— sive training program that covers all aspects of parent- hood, ranging from per- sonal, emotional maturity workshops to practical how- to's of childcare, such as diapering and children's ‘U Lab is short for "Utopian Laboratory." Ask for more information on this subject. INTENTIONAL ALTERNATIVE EDUCATIONAL CHILDCARE games. This training course is not only taken by the mother-to-be, but by all the adults (male and female) and young people (adoles- cents) within the village af- finity group. if Alternative There are three family types a person can choose from in the real world: single-adult, nuclear, or ex- tended families. (Each type has sub-variations within the broad heading.) We are concerned with the extend- ed family choice. Our pro- grams help people figure out what options exist in the area of extended family liv- ing, covering such ques- tions as sexuality, inter- personal communications, emotional self-develop- ment, group dynamics, eco- village design, decision- making, neo-tribal society, economic cooperativism, and many other key themes. In addition to spreading general information of this kind, we can help a person find real, specific, existing groups and family situations they can explore joining. Educational Childcare These last two words of the title must be taken to- gether because in our pro- gram, education begins as soon as a child is born (actu- ally before, if you consider the preparation for the child that goes on). Thus, learning is not seen to start at the late age of three or six, with for- mal schooling. The U Lab is the school. lnside of it, a child learns all sorts of things, from basic social skills and values to scholas- tics, sports, and vocational skills. The environment is carefully designed to rein- force fundamental positive human capacities (such as artistic inclinations, socia- bility, and interest in life) in the children. The people who teach reading, writing, arithmetic and more com- plex studies are not only sin- cerely interested in these subjects and in teaching, but are actually lasting friends and/or parents of the children, developing re- lationships of mutual fun and caring that will be con- stants in both their (adults‘ and children's) lives. The splits between learning and home environments, and the hierarchical arrangement of old learning institutions, are dissolved. Show less
