Can we create an integrated conglomerate of learning consoles situated in a variety of beautiful environments, attached to the association of adults (named above) involved in perpetual learning, growth, and multiple parenting? Can we create a multimedia encyclopedia which would link the learning consoles (named above) to a comprehensive body of knowledge relevant to the holistic development of children, from birth through adult life? Can we develop an educational methodology which comprehends the physiology of the learning process? Show less

There are now sixteen people in the San Francisco Kerista Villaga who are working to establish an Operations Room where we can be of service to all who write to us. We'd like to help you find others who are likeminded and who live in your geographic area, 9. People who are into our lifestyle are invited to visit us in San Francisco. We have established a "25-Day Seminar" which enables those who want to study our theories and see us in our daily lives to come and live with us in Kerista Village. Write to me about this if you want to know more about it. 10. The trust-building process, Gestalt-O-Rama, is based upon the principle of tantric sexuality through laughter. Multiple parenting is the main theme of our childcare system, which is at the core of our entire experiment. All adult mem- bers of a B-FIC (extended family) are in- volved in the role of primary parenting, with strong reinforcement from the com- munity as a whole. The larger community is responsible for education of the children, from birth on up. We have our own private school, con- nected to a nonprofit educational corpora- tion, and are using a wise assortment of new approaches and techniques in the learning process. ’£!Ve‘i§KZ‘ 11 NEW MEMBERS ARE WELCOME How does one become a member of Keris- ta Village? But we don't like to get too concerned about how fast, or in precisely what manner, all this will come to pass. Sometimes it seems that a lot of it could sweep the nation and the world in our lifetimes; other times it seems more likely that perhaps in three hundred years, what we've started will have had some real impact. It's important to keep a balance between the altruistic, universal perspective and desires, and the unpressurized, relaxed, enjoy-the-ride perspective. in less far-fetched scenarios, we are aiming towards establishing a rural base, or bases, in Northern California, to co-exist with our urban base (which we intend to keep per- manently, in San Francisco). We want to have working farms, orchards, eco-villages, and other country-based enter- prises. We already have plans for housing designed specifically for B-FIC living. We want part of the rural scene to be designed as an educational childcare community, for our own children and possibly other children whom we will adopt very young. We want a survival capability in the event of natural or human-made disasters. We are designing learn- ing rooms, equipped with comfortable seats, good sound systems, and large video and/or cinema screens that we will be programming with our own shows and selections available from commercial sources. We hope to deal with In a beehive cluster house. designed by Evan Eve. What would It be like to live in space designed specillcaiiy for a poiylidelltous lamlly? This is one vision at it, a B-FIC living room the problem of child TV addiction in this way; having only pre-planned programs available to be switched on at any time. We do not intend to prevent our children from seeing a wide variety of shows including subjects alien to our own lifestyle and way of thinking, but we do want to provide in- sulation from the more intensely negative input. We are also in the early stages of having our own production capability for multi-media entertaining and education programs (com- ics, books, scripts, films, tapes) and expect this to expand as more people join us with more of the appropriate skills. Two things we feel we do not lack are content and inspira- tion. Other fantasies that are very likely to come about in the not-too-distant future are the acquisition of boats (pleasure and fishing), and the creation of a communal information service that provides everyone seeking a new lifestyle with a comprehensive, accessible list of contacts and referrals in accordance with their own fantasies and desires. (This is already happening on a small scale.) More futuristically, we envision a network of Utopian centers spread out far and wide within which we will be able to travel freely and be received at each stopping point by friends of like mind and goodwill. Naturally, we expect at least one of these will be in a tropical island setting. We also have futuristic hopes of being able to mount a full»fIedged, civilian branch of service, all-volunteer and democratically run, that will serve society meaningfully via all manner of ecology, childcare, health care, tree food, vocational oppor- tunity and care-of-the-aged programs, both here and abroad. It does not seem at all unlikely to us, if, as and when our community grows large enough in numbers. At that stage economics should not create any problems, just as now in our smaller operation they do not. We like to let people know that when they join us, we are actually joining them, to give them support in bringing their fantasies into reality. So far it's been that way for each one of us. Keristans like to say that living by a set of values that you create for yourself is true freedom. The evolution of freedom is an idea which is deeply venerated by Keristans. If you were to ask a Keristan what attracted her or him to the group, you would be likely to hear that the person had the same essen- tial beliefs about total equality and world betterment before discovering Kerista, and was excited by finding others with like ideals. represents the spirit of freedom which unites Keristans The greatest ideal ofall ideals which unifies the members ofthe social community can be stated in nine words: Universal Wellbeing Including The Elimination Of All Unnecessary Suffering.

Lesson 36 - The Cosmic Opera l A COOPERATIVE ALLIANCE BETWEEN THE INDIGENOUS FOLKS OF PORTLAND PARISH, JAMAICA, THE JAPANESE & ISRAELI KIBBUTZNIKS & THE JOAN JETT HAIGHTASHBURY FAN CLUB Here's the Basic W90 Introducing the Citizens of Planet Earth to ODDS) The "Commune Cooperation as a Global Dynamic" Game: First the communal livers in the HaightAshbury, called Kibbutz Kerista, (also known as The Joan Jeti l-laight,Ashbury Fan Club) came up with a plan to use their surplus energl to help poor folks. They realized that living cooperatively was cheaper than living in an isolated lifestyle. Since they were very idealistic types who were basic hippies, they didn't want; to use the money they saved from living together to raise their own standard of living beyond a funky, reasonable, middle class level. They had another need besides a comfortable life which was to feel the self—esteem (and vanity) of being philanthropists even though they worked really hard and weren't rich. Through a series of mystical connections and cosmic coincidences, they made contact with the folks who live in the hills of Portland Parish, Jamaica. They read all about the tribe of people called the Marccns, who defeated the British in 1739 and gined their independence before the American Revolution had even taken place. As an authentic hippie tribe, the Keristans identified a lot with the freedom-loving spirit and tribal culture of the Maroons They thought that Portland Parish would be the perfect place to do their pilot prototype economic development projects, and art and recreation would be the methodology. The Keristans had a lot of good intentions, but as city dwellers it wasn't long before they realized that agriculture was not their area of expertise » to say the least.’ At the same time, the Keristans had begun communications with key intellectuals in the lfibbutz movement of Israel The Kibbutzniks had been an inspiration to the Keristans because they were a suwessfiil example of voluntary communal living inside a free enterprise economy. Over the last eighty years they developed vast areas of virtual desert into profitable farrnland and beautiful gardens The Kibbutzniks were at a crisis point because of social problems caused by the lack of a communications process and runni.ng into wonomic difiiculties It dawned on the Keristans that a mutual program of assistance could be advantageous to everyone concerned. The Kibbutzniks, with their expertise in advanced methods of growing food, irrigation and efl‘ect:ive use of resources could provide the experiential inforn1at:ion that the people of Portland Parish could really use. The Keristans in turn, who really specialized in "relationships as an art form" could help revitalize the lagging spirits of the Kibbutzniks Together they could work to build a Transnational Kibbutz Movement; what Geoff Bercovich of the Kibbutz Study Center in Efal calls "Commune Cooperation as a Global Dynamic" This would create a giant new world market for relevant goods and services produced by the Israeli Kibbutz enterprises and turn around their currmt wonomic difliculties. Meanwhile, back in Jamaica, as the Maroons benefit from The Kerista/Kibbutz Alliance, they will not only be able to provide for themselves but will actually create a surplus which they will channel into further philanthropy. This will start a chain reaction which will continue to spread until poverty has been eliminated and the planet has been Utopianized All it will take is "fantastic communications" as an art form. The Keristans in San Francisco are specialists in art production & printing. So far, the communication has been good with folks in both Jamaica and Israel The programs introduced to Portland Parish are proceeding at a nice pace and the dialogue with our Kibbutz cousins is very exciting. If you see yourselffitiing into this alliance in any way there's still time to have the vanity of getting in on the ground floor. The Alliance for Creative Philanthropy invites dialogue. Call or write: Kibbutz Kerista, 547 Frederick Street, San lfiancisco, CA 94117 U.S.A. (415)759-9508 or 759-8102. Just remember, the most important. person in the world is the next one to join us as a joint-venture partner, research assodate, colleague, scholar or team artist,‘ Penpals are welcome. THE ALLIANCE FOR CREATIVE PHILANTHROPY introduces A L L I A N C E V I L L A G E S Imagine. if you will, a strin of villages. Some are rural; others are urban. Held together in a network. they are collectively known as Alliance villages. These settlements are intentional. The people living together here are living together for a common purpose: to raise their standard of living and quality of their social life at the same time that they endeavor to do the same for others in a cooperative fashion. It is a fact that economic sharing saves money. In the first instance. this improves the standard of living for all participants. enabling every woman. man, and child to enjoy a secure and comfortable life. Even after this level of economic stability is achieved, a surplus is generated. This surplus builds the reserves of the community and enables it to be philanthropic with its average, helping others to upgrade the quality of their lives. This is the second step in a natural process of economic growth. The efficiency of the economic sharing model has been demonstrated for three generations in the kibbutz system of Israel. The kibbutz is a classic example of an intentional rural village. In the nation of Israel three percent of the population lives in the kibbutz system. This same three percent produces twelve percent of that country's gross national product. zero percent of that country's crime, and a truly significant number of Israel's finest leaders. In the United states. in the city of San Francisco. a successful model of an urban village has been operational since 1971. The common purpose that brought these individuals together was this simple notion that by living cooperatively they could (I) ensure a very comfortable standard of living for themselves; (2) generate philanthropy that could do the same for others; and (3) have more fun out of life. These people are not rich. They are ordinary workers: housecleaners. gardeners. cab drivers, office workers, artists, salespeople. and teachers. Under normal circumstances. they would have enough. Because they choose to live cooperatively. they have more than enough. These are the people behind the Alliance for Creative Philanthropy. Because of their strong sense of affinity with the rich history and deep cultural integrity of the people of Jamaica, they have chosen to begin the Alliance village projects here. Needs exist in Jamaica, as they do throughout the world, that can be successfully addressed by the plan. Jamaica has strong traditions of independence, innovation, and the seeking of freedom; many people in the modern world respect Jamaica as a source of leadership. The Alliance for Creative Philanthropy feels that Jamaica will make the difference. This; then. is their description Alliance Villages Page 2 of how Alliance villages would be structured and what they would accomplish. It is hoped that the Ministry will have both blessings and support for the furtherance of the project. THE RURAL VILLAGES will be set up to consist of three parts: (1) the Host Village; (2) the Guest Village; and (3) the Solutions Mall and Service Center. The Host Villa e will be a cooperative farm in which people learn and use the East in available agricultural methods and technology. Because farm resources will be shared, there is no need for individual farmers to purchase their own equipment. build their own farm buildings, or rely simply on themselves and their family members for labor. Larger projects with larger yields can be successfully undertaken in this way. Rural host villages will also serve as working models for appropriate technology. harnessing the energy-renewable potential of solar, wind. and water power. The Guest Villa a will be maintained and operated by the host villagers an wi accommodate tourists. primarily from North America, Israel, western Europe and Japan. The tourists will be screened and given practical and educational orientations before arriving on the island for their ‘off-the-beaten-track" vacations. They will be looking for and experiencing a more down-to-earth closeness with the people and the daily rhythm of the island than they possibly could through the island's traditionally established channels of tourism. The revenue from this tourist trade would come directly to and remain with the people themselves. The Alliance for Creative Philanthropy would provide free administrative and screening services for the tourist programs. The Solutions Mall and Service Center will link the host and guest portions 0? the Illiance Village. As a Solutions Mall, it will provide solutions to some of the basic needs of the host villagers. Medical, dental, and mental health services will be available free of charge as part of the standard of living. Educational programs (affiliated with the University of Utopia Extension Center Network) will center around the Unicare Learning nos-r vuuce FURAL cues-r VILLAGE Alliance village Page 3 Console which uses audio, video, slides, film, computers and group discussion as primarily learning tools. Children and adults alike will be able to study the fundamentals of reading, writing. mathematics. bookkeeping, and computer literacy. They will also be able to study academic subjects of their choice such as history and science. Principles of office management and small business management will be stressed throughout the educational process, both in and out of the classroom. The Service Center will cater to the needs of both hosts and guests. A restaurant (free or low cost to host villagers) will be a community developed and owned business as will be general stores. arts and crafts trading posts, laundromats and other revenue generating businesses of interest to the villager guests. The service center will also include a theater and space for community meetings. educational or cultural presentations, and dances for folks of all ages. Community dances will be a regular feature in every Alliance Village and provide much of the social glue that will keep life there fun and vibrant. THE URBAN VILLAGE will function and be set up in precisely the same manner as the Rural Village. It. too, will contain a host village. a guest village. and a solutions mall/service center. There will be only two real differences. First, the urban village will adapt itself to urban housing available in the city or town in which it is located. Housing that is owned or rented will be clustered as closely as possible but will not necessarily be adjacent,as it would be in a rural village. The urban village is a 'psychographic village”; it may be separated by a few streets, but never by values or community-held purpose. The second difference has to do with the nature of the people's livelihood. Small business operation and entrepreneurship, rather than agriculture. will be the sources of revenue. Besides the businesses connected to the Service Center. an urban village may operate any number of other businesses in its home city or town. Print shops. retail stores. and light manufacturing are excellent possibilities. All business enterprises would have the nurturing and guidance of the Abacus Method Small Business Owners‘ Business School in San Francisco available to them. The Abacus Business School is affiliated with the Alliance for Creative Philanthropy and helps approximately 500 small business owners in the San Francisco Bay Area with a variety of business needs. The business school will have extensions in the urban and rural villages. People will learn by doing; the businesses themselves will be laboratories providing the real hands-on learning that follows from classroom. home study. and audio-visual instruction. Alliance Villages Page 4 Hosr“vn.L»ee" UREAN eves-r "VILLAGE" Guests in the urban village will have the same relationship to the host villagers as they do in the country. Urban guest houses and their guests will be looked after by their hosts and the revenue from the tourists will stay with the people. The link between the urban villages and the rural villages gives guests the ability to move about between the two. thereby experiencing both sides of Jamaican life. THE MOBILE EDUCATIONAL UNIT is attached to the University of Utopia Extension Center located within each Solutions Mall. The mobile unit focuses its exhibits and presentations on four main themes: (1) the importance of building a personal connection to history, especially the history of one's own nation and people, to self-esteem, self-knowledge. and self-actualization. (2) the specific history of Jamaica as a nation and as an extraordinarily rich mix of people and cultures. Nanny, the Jamaican national heroine and legendary leader of the Maroons, will be taught about as a role model of courage. strength, vision and the quest for freedom. The role of the Maroons. past and present. in Jamaican life will be an important part of the multi-media exhibits. (3) the many different types and models of economic and social cooperation that exist within free enterprise systems and democratic nations. Economic cooperatives. skills banks, working collectives, and profit sharing are examples of ways to share financial, management, and labor resources. Many alternatives ranging from communes to child rearing and domestic chore co-ops exist in the realm of social cooperation. The meanings of these choices and the ways of life that they imply will be explained and discussed in the presentations. (4) the description and depiction of Alliance Villages and their way of life. Alliance Villages Page 5 The Mobile Educational Unit will use a variety of media to communicate its themes: literature, storytelling. video. film. co-op theater, slides, photos. audio tapes, computerized learning programs an music. PRINCIPLES & VALUES OF THE PROGRAM The Alliance Village concept is predicated on the idea that a comfortable standard of living and an upscaled social life are easily attained through economic and domestic sharing at the community level. The program's framers do not. by any means, assume that more than a small percentage of Jamaica's population (approximately 3 percent) would end up living in Alliance Villages. The idea is. however. that the Alliance Village system would ultimately have the same beneficial impact on Jamaica that the kibbutz system has had on the nation of Israel. Though the number of people involved would be comparatively small relative to Jamaica's total population, the program's effects would be far-reaching in the lives of the people it touches. the strength of the communities it shapes. and the economic and cultural well-being of the island as a whole. Individual sovereignty, social tolerance and community interdependence are principle values of the Alliance Villages. Participatory democracy. a continued respect for cultural diversity and integrity. and a voluntary adherence to a community-held body of norms and standards all reflect this spirit. An individual may come or go from the Village at any time simply by wishing it; yet. while she/he participates, she/he will be expected by the other members of the community to behave in accordance with the "social contract” and to share in community responsibilities. The success of the Alliance Village network will depend upon finding people who get involved because they see the vision themselves, are enthusiastic, responsible, intelligent communicative, and capable of playing as equals. The plan itself will work; relevant prototypes exist in Israel. Japan, and the United states. It will not work if the Alliance for creative Philanthropy is able to find individuals interested in participating only for short-term gain or opportunity to become dependent on the system. The spirit of equality must permeate every attitude and activity in the Alliance Village project. RESOURCES OF THE PROJECT take two forms: human resources and financial resources. The small business enterprises of the Alliance Villages have the uninterrupted backing of the Abacus Method Small Business Owners‘ Business School in San Francisco. The Alliance for Alliance Villages Page 6 Creative Philanthropy is currently investigating possibilities of ongoing help from the members of Israeli kibbutz communities for the agricultural and livestock enterprises in the rural villages. Individuals in the San Francisco Bay Area and elsewhere are being contacted for guidance in program areas such as tourism, restaurant management, dental care. and computer literacy training. Through frequent correspondence, and occasionally through personal contact, the Alliance for Creative Philanthropy has begun to build the foundations of grassroots support for the plan. At the time of this writing. there are two Jamaican management trainee candidates involved in the early stages of the plan. The Alliance for Creative Philanthropy is financially supported by its members and by the members of Performing Arts Social Society, Inc.. a non-profit educational corporation, chartered by the State of California since 1968. Performing Arts Social Society, Inc. is the parent organization through which the Alliance operates. Many of the members of Performing Arts Social Society are San Francisco Bay Area business owners who financially support Alliance projects in exchange for help from the Abacus Method Small Business Owners‘ Business School. Plans exist now for increasing the funding from both individual and business member sources. Foundations and other granting agencies will also be approached but. as a matter of policy, the Alliance for Creative Philanthropy will never depend upon outside grants for its financial stability. The Alliance shall always remain financially healthy and independent through its unique combination of free enterprise funding and surplus income sharing through cooperative living. HON THE MINISTRY OF YOUTH AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CAN GET INVOLVED Because of its independent financial position, the Alliance for Creative Philanthropy seeks no monetary aid whatsoever from the Ministry of Youth and Culture. The volunteers of the Alliance do, however, feel they probably share many goals in common with the Ministry and would like to learn more about the Ministry's endeavors--what it has accomplished in the past; what its current goals. programs, needs, strengths and weaknesses are; and what it projects for the future. Similarly. the Alliance is keenly interested in finding someone within the Ministry of Youth and Community Development who wishes to learn more about the Alliance Village project in particular and who wishes to study the past. present and future activities of the Alliance in general. It is a reciprocity of interest connected to genuine curiosity, enthusiasm. and good will that is sought. Literature. audio-visual presentations, financial spreadsheets, and graphic illustrations can easily be made available for examination. As a starting point, the Aiiiance Viilages Page 7 Afiiance for Creative Phi1anthrop_y invites intefiigent dialogue through correspondence with one or more members of the Ministry. They try to solve the world’s problems by creating a SULABian Economic Order, using art & ideas in con- certed harmony as their method. How far will they go? Once upon a time, in 1967 A.D., two girls met in junior high school and agreed to merge their energies in the creation of a new invention, the SU-LAB.* The SU-LAB is a social institution based on the principle of affinity clusters: people of like ideas, ideals, interests and/or values inten- tionally linking together in a lasting association for enhanced social interaction, educational child- care, and sharing of many kinds. The SU-LAB reinforces the family unity (single-adult, nuclear or multi-adult family), allowing people to overcome boredom and loneliness, and holistically improve the quality of their lives. SULABIAN EARTHIANISM is a belief system that enables idealistic individuals to form a force dedicated to the establishment of a SU- LABian Economic Order (i.e., a world based on the SU-LAB as the village or socio-economic unit, with ecological, global consciousness prevailing). Gift Labor Energy Exchange (GLEE) net- works form the back-bone of the SULABian Economic Order. Electronic “trading stamps” are used throughout the network. Members carry electronic credit cards to register their debits, credits, and credit balances. “ Short for “SCIENTIFIC UTOPIAN LABORATORY’ The eventual establishment of a transnational confederation of SU-LABS is the mission of the SULABIAN PEACE CORPS. At present, members of the Sulabian Peace Corps (SPC) in San Francisco are organized to communicate to tens of thousands of people (“ABCs” . . . Altruism Beneficiary Colleagues) about how to form their own SU-LABs, or join an already existing one. SPC members are part of the first SU-LAB. This prototype has enough internal strength to bring itself to maturity (economic sufficiency, psychological well-being and a full population of 10,080 adults plus children), and use its phil- anthropic energy (surplus) to create another SU-LAB. This “seed” grows into many SU-LABs via replication of the prototype model, helped along by communication of information and philanthropic support. Show less

Why should we help them?” The answer to these questions is very profound. Something priceless! The feeling that we had done something for them without their being able to do any» thing in return for us. That is a feeling that glows and sings in your memory long after the incident has passed. Folks who are truly magnanimous are folks who are truly blessed. \X/HEN FOLKS HELP OTHER FOLKS TO HELP THEMSELVES \ GRATITUDE IS SHOWN BY DOING SOMETHING FOR OTHERS‘ How can the Eastern Maroons repay the Keristans if the Keristans do or give something of value and good for the Eastern Maroons? How can they show their appreciation? What ought they to do? The Eastern Maroons ought to do something for the Western Maroons without the Western Maroons being able to do something in return. Thus, the perpetual motion goodwill machine be— gins. The Western Maroons, to show their appreciation, after receiving some free goods and services from the Eastern Maroons ought to pick some other Jamaicans to do something for, without ever expecting anything of value in return. ENERGY EXCHANGE Here’s exactly how it works: A does something for B; B does something in grat- itude for C; C does something in gratitude for D and so on, ad infinitum. The gift labor energy has a magic connected to modern mysticism. THE GIFT LABOR ENERGY EXCHANGE IS AN HONOR SYSTEM WHICH IS FOUNDED UPON A BASIC PRINCIPLE IN HUMAN CONDUCT: “There is one all-important law of human conduct. If we obey that law, we shall almost never get into trouble. In fact, that law, if obeyed, will bring us countless friends and constant happiness. But the very instant we break the law, we shall get into endless trouble. The law is this: Always make the other person feel important. Professor John Dewey says that the desire to be important is the deepest urge in human nature; and Professor William James says: ‘The deepest principle in human nature is the craving to be appreciated.’ As I have already pointed out, it is the urge that differentiates us from the animals. It is the urge that has been responsible for civil- ization itself.” —Dale Carnegie Show less
