Title: Lauer Saal

Notes: Description: Early 1900 view of the Lauer Saal, a portion of the Main Amana Meeting House and some homes, taken from an upper level of the Amana General Store. The focus on this image is not overly sharp. The Lauer Saal, which burned in the 1930s, was the original, 1856 meeting house for the village. After the new meeting house was built in 1864, this building became an evening prayer service location. Image is 3 1/4 X 4 1/8 mounted on an embossed card that is 4 1/4 X 5 1/2.

Notes: Description: Photograph printed on post card stock. Photograph is marked "Taken in May 1911 C. Hy. Muesse" on back. Jacob F. Selzer (1888-1917)was the probably photographer. Unusual aspect of this picture is that one of the original log cabins and houses that predated the Amana purchase of Homestead is clearly visible in the background. The cabin and house were demolished not long after - this is one of only two photographs of them that I have seen.

Title: Moershel House, Amana

Notes: Description: Somewhat overexposed view of the Moershel residence in Amana with fence, grape trellis and other traditional features. View was taken around 1901 when the brick addition was made to this house. The stone portion of the house (at left) was built in 1858 and was originally the home of Wilhelm Moershel (1794 - 1862) a leading figure in the Ebenezer and Amana Societies.
