Studying the Idea of Cooperation Kerista is a feminist organization made up of women and men who participate in various cultural and artistic projects and ac- tivities around their personal interest areas. The goals of Kerista are to improve society in non-political, artistic and social ways, and to be a support group for enhancing individual self-esteem through friendship. To be a member, a person starts by seeing her/himself as an idealist and an artist. Next, that person looks for a way to get beyond lonerism, and participate with others who see themselves the same way. By getting to know each other, and identifying common interest areas, the idealists of the Kerista Social Community engage in experimental projects that they feel are worthwhile for the good of the world. The emphasis is on Team Art and Cooperation as a cultural art form that produces visible results. The people working on the show are colleagues collaborating on an art form much greater than mgulti-media entertainment. The larger art form which they serve is: CULTURE SCULPTURE.. . the creation of a model intentional community/minksociety/micro- culture which is as near to being ideal as is humanly possible. They have a base in San Francisco, Lake County and Sonoma and are opening up links with people all over the west coast who are interested in utopian ideas. The TGC (Traveling Gestalt Circus) is constantly trying to reach people who: a. are involved in working to make their own lives more utopian, b. are working on new—age-type projects, communities, farms, coops, collectives, etc. who may want to join the network, . want to join the TGC with an act of their own, and/or . wish to explore the possibility of joining the Storefront Community (the intentional com- munity of which the TGC performers are members.) UNIVERSITY OF UTOPIA EXTENSIONS The University of Utopia de- scribed so tar in this booklet is the original, San Francisco branch. However, there is no reason why this should be the only branch. People who live in places far from San Francisco might want to start their own regional University of Utopia extensions. Starting a U of U extension in- volves these requirements: 1) Establishing a good, ongoing communication by phone. mail, and/or personal visits with the members of Kerista Village (foun- ders of the San Francisco center). 2) Becoming a member in the Utopian Society. (Dues are $6 a year, and entitle members to a subscription to Utopian Eyes, a quarterly journal of U of U activi- ties, futuristic plans, theory and fantasy, and news of Kerista Vil- lage developments.) 3) Agreement to abide by the basic criteria of the U of U de- scribed earlier (verbality, equality, non-sexism, rationality, convivial- ity, ideal-centeredness. desire to make new friends, and desire for sell-improvement). 4) Agreement to relinquish the title “University of Utopia" if there is a communications breakdown or other irreconcilable differences with the originators of the U of U in San Francisco, resulting in a re- quest that the extension founder ‘stop using that name. (This is part of the principle of graceful dis- tancing and respect for project originatorship mentioned before.) Apart from these things. Univer- sity of Utopia extensions operate independently. with their own democratic constitutions. Starting such a project is an excellent way to build up a meaningful social scene, where people will take the group spirit seriously. Lifestyle choice discussions, theatrical en- tertainment and other activities can happen, just as they do in San Francisco. In fact. U of U exten- sions will have every assistance the San Francisco center can give. which includes all the print- ed materials published by Kerista Village as well as audio cassettes and video cassettes on a variety of subjects. Anyone interested in be- coming a University of Utopia ex- tension originator should get in touch as soon as possible. to be- gin a dialogue about plans and possibilities. THE UNIVERSITY OF UTOPIA The University of Utopia was started by a group of people who wanted to combine peer learning with ongoing friend- ship. To understand it, you must first dismiss all old images of what a university is. This university is an alternative learning environment. Indi- viduals come together agree- ing to basic guidelines of con- viviality, rationality, verbality, equality, ideal-centeredness, non-sexism, self-direction, and a commitment to self- improvement. The University of Utopia is a cooperative learning center. Members put energy into the administrative departments and programs of the University and originate courses of study or projects which are open to other members. Everyone in the University studies and ex- periences the “Gesta|t—O- Rama”@ educational process. For close to 24 years Gestalt- O-Rama has been developing as a learning system. Gestalt- O—Rama is a method of achiev- ing increased awareness. Awareness leads to growth and change. The Gestalt-O-Rama proc- ‘ess teaches you how to draw wisdom from everything you do. It is a do-it-yourself mental health system ’ revolving around peer, face-to—face interaction in ongoing discus- sion groups. People plot their own courses for personal de- velopment based on self- chosen objectives. Everyone learns from peers in the proc- ess, as each new friend shares insights she/he has gained on her/his path to self—improve- ment. At the University of Uto- pia students Iearn more than 90 tried-and-proven growth techniques. Members have shown visible results in such areas as selfesteem, speaking ability, confidence, general de- meanor, quality of homelife and positive mental attitude. Gestalt-O-Rama is only part of the student education. In addition, University work- shops and classes cover a broad variety of activities and subjects. Here are a few University ac- tivities and programs which occurred in recent years: IAn operational printing and publishing workshop which turns out educational material produced by students. I A Wilderness Training School through which stu- dents went white-water river rafting, skiing, backpacking and camping. I Dances, pot lucks, volleyball games, country retreats and free film festivals. I Three original dramatic plays, a musical, and a number of semi-improvisational come- dies. (The University has a resident repertory company.) I A singing group which com- posed and performed more than 20 original songs. I The first steps toward estab- lishing a University of Utopia Extension outside the U.S.—in the Third World island nation of Dominica, located in the Caribbean. I Super 8 motion pictures. I A mental-health board game called “Gestalt-O-Rama: The Self-Esteem Game." flirtfl Here are a few University ac- tivities currently getting start- ed: I The Abacus School, an early- childhood development center run by University members. I The Sheriffs Volunteer Corps, a task force of Univer- sity members taking the Ge- stalt-O-Rama process inside the prisons. I Production of science fiction novels. I Production of audio-cas- settes on all aspects of actual- izing unused personal poten- tial. I Production of non—sexist children's literature. Nutrition I English Grammar I Offset Printing I Comparative Cultures I Ulabian Psychology I Group Dynamics I Alternative Family Structure AND MORE (A complete list of current workshops is published quar- terly in the Utopian Eyes jour- nal.) Here’s how it works: All prospective members at- tend a One Time Introductory Seminar at the University. Can- didates who are accepted into the program choose to attend two, four or six peer, face-to- face discussions groups per month. These discussion groups take the form of a U- labian Psychology Workshop and Contemporary Utopian Philosophy Club which meet twice a month and a Wednes- day Night Class that meets every Wednesday. University members may attend just the Contemporary Utopian Philos- ophy Club (two times a month), just the Wednesday Night Class (four times a month), or both (six times a month). Beyond that, mem- bers may originate or attend any other workshops or pro- grams, seminars, field trips, lecture series, and theatrical productions. I mean, I certainly think that Axl Rose was being an asshole when he wrote "One in a Million" (a song marked by lyrics like "faggots, get out of my way", I reallydon'tbuythe rap he has about the tune not being racist and homophobic because "black people call each otherniggers",etal. When _ ,, he continued to support the tune and claim it wasn't racist after fl , the KKK named them their official ;‘ band, well, it knocked an even larger ' hole into his shrinking credibility, and hopefully, if Guns & Roses were just too stupid to know how for real their prejudice is, the KKK thing will shake them up. I think the idea that people are running around today advocating geno- cide is pretty repulsive, too. The thing I'd like to ask you about is the idea that of going off alone and blow- ing off stream. What does that mean? Does it mean you're going to punch pillows or hit walls, or do pri- mal screaming? We're not really into that. I like to focus my feelings University of Utopia about those kind of things (prejudice, etc.) into efforts to eliminate negativity and unnecessary suffering, and ’ bringing about global prosper- ity. I really agree that working for more than my own grubby existence has enriched my life. Having a plan is what keeps me from going into a frus- ' trated state about the amount of change that needs to happen, that, and being zen. I mean, if .. things turn out ditferentlythanlthink they Will, and if I don't see in my life time universal well-being, then I fully believe that there would be a reason for that, just as there was a reason for everything that has happened before. I really thing that things are getting to a better and better place, and that the whole planet is evolving and building character just like I am, getting civilized, and getting away from barbaric behavior. I'm glad I'm on a team that's working towards it. As far as the irrational ideas thing goes, well, I'm really into grandiose future fantasy, and don't thing there is anything nutty at all about projecting out possible scenarios. We have some great stuff on far out space age scenarios, like houses where you talk to the walls and they handle certain tasks for you ("balance my checkbook and project some full-screen MTV, please..."), and space villages, complete with gestalt communications proc- ess, in the honorable sci-ti tradition. I mean, HG Wells correctly predicted space travel as well as the women's rights movement in his fiction, both far-out scenarios at the time. The standard is to protect us from dealing with loops of meaningless conversation, where someone says something weird (like "the devil made me University of Utopia 5g>%University of Utopia crash the car", or "the world will be miraculously transformed October 13, 1989 into Eden tomorrow at 8am, so don't both working for change, it will happen while you sleep", or, as someone actually did say once, "I don't care if it is my voice on that cassette tape, I never said Jesse Potter that") and ex ects us to absorb the weird statement. The stan- dards, as you clan see, are to protect the purity of our scene.
