People who live in places far from San Francisco might want to start their own regional University of Utopia extensions. Starting a U of U extension in- volves these requirements: 1) Establishing a good, ongoing communication by phone. mail, and/or personal visits with the members of Kerista Village (foun- ders of the San Francisco center). 2) Becoming a member in the Utopian Society. THE UNIVERSITY OF UTOPIA The University of Utopia was started by a group of people who wanted to combine peer learning with ongoing friend- ship. To understand it, you must first dismiss all old images of what a university is. This university is an alternative learning environment. Indi- viduals come together agree- ing to basic guidelines of con- viviality, rationality, verbality, equality, ideal-centeredness, non-sexism, self-direction, and a commitment to self- improvement. The University of Utopia is a cooperative learning center. Members put energy into the administrative departments and programs of the University and originate courses of study or projects which are open to other members. Everyone in the University studies and ex- periences the “Gesta|t—O- Rama”@ educational process. For close to 24 years Gestalt- O-Rama has been developing as a learning system. Gestalt- O—Rama is a method of achiev- ing increased awareness. Awareness leads to growth and change. The Gestalt-O-Rama proc- ‘ess teaches you how to draw wisdom from everything you do. It is a do-it-yourself mental health system ’ revolving around peer, face-to—face interaction in ongoing discus- sion groups. People plot their own courses for personal de- velopment based on self- chosen objectives. Everyone learns from peers in the proc- ess, as each new friend shares insights she/he has gained on her/his path to self—improve- ment. I think the idea that people are running around today advocating geno- cide is pretty repulsive, too. The thing I'd like to ask you about is the idea that of going off alone and blow- ing off stream. What does that mean? Does it mean you're going to punch pillows or hit walls, or do pri- mal screaming? We're not really into that. I really agree that working for more than my own grubby existence has enriched my life. I mean, if .. things turn out ditferentlythanlthink they Will, and if I don't see in my life time universal well-being, then I fully believe that there would be a reason for that, just as there was a reason for everything that has happened before. I really thing that things are getting to a better and better place, and that the whole planet is evolving and building character just like I am, getting civilized, and getting away from barbaric behavior. I'm glad I'm on a team that's working towards it. As far as the irrational ideas thing goes, well, I'm really into grandiose future fantasy, and don't thing there is anything nutty at all about projecting out possible scenarios. We have some great stuff on far out space age scenarios, like houses where you talk to the walls and they handle certain tasks for you ("balance my checkbook and project some full-screen MTV, please..."), and space villages, complete with gestalt communications proc- ess, in the honorable sci-ti tradition. I mean, HG Wells correctly predicted space travel as well as the women's rights movement in his fiction, both far-out scenarios at the time. Hospital) in New York, San Francisco General Hospital, the University of Califomia’s Langley Porter Institute, and she has done oncological nursing at UC. Hospital in San Francisco. The emotions work as "guides" for the intellect, i. e., whenever a person is involved in practices which are in conflict with her/his human instincts, she/he will feel a decline in her/his "synergy." As soon as the individual makes the appropriate adjustments in her/his lifestyle, she/he will experience a "lightening up" of tension, and will move back into "high" synergy rather than “low" synergy. Depressions don't occur irrationally; they are the result of faulty habit patterns. Any behavior that is in conflict with one or more‘ of the innate, natural attributes of humans results in some degree of depression. When an individual lives with other people, the synergy level refers to the overall feeling (sense of highness or lownessl experienced by the members of the group as a result of their lifestyle, behavioral norms, philosophy and the qualitative content of the interpersonal relationships within the group. An individual's or a group's synergy is always present, i.e., people are always feeling something. However some people do not take the time to analyze how they are feeling. Each person who seriously studies utopian psychology does take the time to constantly consider whether she/he feels positive or negative about how she/he lives and what she/he does. In utopian psychology individuals and groups record their feelings on a Weekly Synergy Chart. The chart lists six gradations of positive energy, ranging from the "smile of reason" or state of sober reality and duty through "spontaneous singing and dancing," a state of extremely high synergy. The chart also lists six gradations of negative energy, ranging from "mild anxiety/indifference," a state of slight uptightness through violence, a state of extremely low syn- ergy which manifests itself in anti-social acts. Separating the two hemispheres of synergy is the ’’line of risibi|ity" or state of neutraliv ty. In reality there is no such thing as being "neutral" when it comes to one's feelings. An individual is either experiencing a level of levity and therefore would be experiencing one of the degrees of feeling above the line of risibility, or is experiencing a level of depression and therefore would be experiencing a degree of feeling below the line of risibility. The chart is also designed to be plotted three times a day; in the morning, afternoon and night. fi6J9UFiS ln plotting the chart it is essential that one be entirely honest about her/his feelings. The objective of the exercise of plotting a synergy chart is to become aware of the presence or absence of depression in one's lifestyle. Every time an individual or a group discovers that they have gone below the line of risibility an intense process of analysis begins. First the individual or group seriously searches for the reason or cause of the depression. People analyze whether they are in the right lifestyle. Many times depression results when an individual is in a lifestyle which she/he is not entirely satisfied with. in those instances a change of lifestyle can root out the presence of depression. (See Utopian Psychology Lesson 3: The Nine Lifestyles.) Once an individual has resolved that she/he has chosen the right lifestyle, she/he should be depression-free, unless she/he is involved in specific anti-instinctive behavior. lf an indivi- dual or group experiences a depression and it is not due to an unresolved contradiction in regards to lifestyle, it is connected to Silecific non-instinctive behavior which must be eliminated. This means that each time depression occurs one should modify her/his lifestyle, thoughts, activities, and behavior, point by point, until she/he arrives at a state of tranquility that is completely depression- free. When one is free of depression all of the recordings she/he marks on the synergy chart will be above the line of risibility. Within that realm there is plenty of room for varied feelings, and, in fact, given the state of the world's problems it is reasonable for people to spend part of their time in sober, serious contemplation. However, responsible concern and seriousness is not depression. The smile of reason connotes a state of mind that is one degree into optimism, whereas mild anxiety/indifference introduces irritability into the picture, and is one degree into pessimism. Pessimism is a level of depression. One recommended practice is for an individual to write down the cause of each depression plotted on the chart. After a habit becomes clearly fixed in one's mind as being depression»reIated, the individual is likely to more easily transcend that particular bad habit (activity which caused the depression) and move that much closer to the goal of utopian psychology: the experience of con- stant, depression-free beautiful joy for sixty seconds out of every minute of one's entire life. We can provide members of this task force with some membership kits. Some of us who can afford it chip in seven dollars a month for a pass-through account managed by Bluejay Way. This money is all spent, every cent of it, to advertise the Utopian Society in national magazines. As more members come in to the society, they are all told about the Utopian Liaison Office. Utopian psychology is a science that opens the way to righteous, natural highness through the use of reason and lifestyle analysis. Utopian psychology is a non-therapeutic psychol- ogy; it has no professionals, counselors, gurus, or fees. There are many rewards for people who are involved in the utopian psychology process on a continuous basis, like for instance good friendships, high conversation, clarity of mind, and a wide range of possibilities in vocational activities, economics, art, and homelife. The Utopian Society is the best thing that ever happened to most of us. It is such a dignified way for us to meet and make new friends. The group in San Francisco acts as a clearing house and central headquarters for communicating all of the ideas to members across the nation. All of us study "Far Out West" comics and introduce our friends to the comic strip. Those of us who see ourselves as world citizens fly the ecology flag in our homes. Many of us are working on the production of the multi-media encyclopaedia and the scenario of "The Cosmic Opera," which describes how the utopians grew and formed a vacation and retirement estate. The center for the study and practice of utopian psychology in San Francisco exists. It is a going concern. The Utopian Society also is a going concern. If other people around the country add their energy to ours, then we will continue to grow and attract many more people.
