Depressions don't occur irrationally; they are the result of faulty habit patterns. Any behavior that is in conflict with one or more‘ of the innate, natural attributes of humans results in some degree of depression. Synergy is a total energy field created by an association of individual energy fields. An individual's synergy level is her/his intrinsic feeling as a result of how she/he lives and what she/he does. When an individual lives with other people, the synergy level refers to the overall feeling (sense of highness or lownessl experienced by the members of the group as a result of their lifestyle, behavioral norms, philosophy and the qualitative content of the interpersonal relationships within the group. An individual's or a group's synergy is always present, i.e., people are always feeling something. However some people do not take the time to analyze how they are feeling. Each person who seriously studies utopian psychology does take the time to constantly consider whether she/he feels positive or negative about how she/he lives and what she/he does. In utopian psychology individuals and groups record their feelings on a Weekly Synergy Chart. The chart lists six gradations of positive energy, ranging from the "smile of reason" or state of sober reality and duty through "spontaneous singing and dancing," a state of extremely high synergy. The chart also lists six gradations of negative energy, ranging from "mild anxiety/indifference," a state of slight uptightness through violence, a state of extremely low syn- ergy which manifests itself in anti-social acts. Separating the two hemispheres of synergy is the ’’line of risibi|ity" or state of neutraliv ty. In reality there is no such thing as being "neutral" when it comes to one's feelings. An individual is either experiencing a level of levity and therefore would be experiencing one of the degrees of feeling above the line of risibility, or is experiencing a level of depression and therefore would be experiencing a degree of feeling below the line of risibility. The chart is also designed to be plotted three times a day; in the morning, afternoon and night. fi6J9UFiS ln plotting the chart it is essential that one be entirely honest about her/his feelings. The objective of the exercise of plotting a synergy chart is to become aware of the presence or absence of depression in one's lifestyle. Every time an individual or a group discovers that they have gone below the line of risibility an intense process of analysis begins. First the individual or group seriously searches for the reason or cause of the depression. People analyze whether they are in the right lifestyle. Many times depression results when an individual is in a lifestyle which she/he is not entirely satisfied with. in those instances a change of lifestyle can root out the presence of depression. (See Utopian Psychology Lesson 3: The Nine Lifestyles.) Once an individual has resolved that she/he has chosen the right lifestyle, she/he should be depression-free, unless she/he is involved in specific anti-instinctive behavior. lf an indivi- dual or group experiences a depression and it is not due to an unresolved contradiction in regards to lifestyle, it is connected to Silecific non-instinctive behavior which must be eliminated. This means that each time depression occurs one should modify her/his lifestyle, thoughts, activities, and behavior, point by point, until she/he arrives at a state of tranquility that is completely depression- free. When one is free of depression all of the recordings she/he marks on the synergy chart will be above the line of risibility. Within that realm there is plenty of room for varied feelings, and, in fact, given the state of the world's problems it is reasonable for people to spend part of their time in sober, serious contemplation. However, responsible concern and seriousness is not depression. The smile of reason connotes a state of mind that is one degree into optimism, whereas mild anxiety/indifference introduces irritability into the picture, and is one degree into pessimism. Pessimism is a level of depression. One recommended practice is for an individual to write down the cause of each depression plotted on the chart. After a habit becomes clearly fixed in one's mind as being depression»reIated, the individual is likely to more easily transcend that particular bad habit (activity which caused the depression) and move that much closer to the goal of utopian psychology: the experience of con- stant, depression-free beautiful joy for sixty seconds out of every minute of one's entire life. She has a group of friends who meet weekly for a prosaics workshop and they get out mailings to stores and people who might want to spread the word, carry the magazine for sale, join the society, etc. Also, those persons who have some free time on their hands could join the Advertising Outreach Task Force and write to people who might want to join the Utopian Society. We can provide members of this task force with some membership kits. Some of us who can afford it chip in seven dollars a month for a pass-through account managed by Bluejay Way. This money is all spent, every cent of it, to advertise the Utopian Society in national magazines. As more members come in to the society, they are all told about the Utopian Liaison Office. Then, local people find out about other , members of the society who live in their geographic area. . . and they can then form into small study and discussion groups. Storefront Classroom Comm. P. O. Utopian psychology is a science that opens the way to righteous, natural highness through the use of reason and lifestyle analysis. Utopian psychology is a non-therapeutic psychol- ogy; it has no professionals, counselors, gurus, or fees. There are many rewards for people who are involved in the utopian psychology process on a continuous basis, like for instance good friendships, high conversation, clarity of mind, and a wide range of possibilities in vocational activities, economics, art, and homelife. The Utopian Society is the best thing that ever happened to most of us. It is such a dignified way for us to meet and make new friends. The group in San Francisco acts as a clearing house and central headquarters for communicating all of the ideas to members across the nation. All of us study "Far Out West" comics and introduce our friends to the comic strip. Those of us who see ourselves as world citizens fly the ecology flag in our homes. Many of us are working on the production of the multi-media encyclopaedia and the scenario of "The Cosmic Opera," which describes how the utopians grew and formed a vacation and retirement estate. The center for the study and practice of utopian psychology in San Francisco exists. It is a going concern. The Utopian Society also is a going concern. If other people around the country add their energy to ours, then we will continue to grow and attract many more people. Our society is not out to make money off of anyone, or to convert anyone to an irrational religion. . . it exists to foster utopian consciousness. Show less

And many of then: don't even know it . . . won't ever know it . . . unless they can somehow learn that real alternatives do exist. We want to propose that "somehow." This is where you come in. Because couldn't you stand to Here's our plan. We publish a quarterly magazine, Utopian Eyes, which is a journal of our own communal experiment in San Francisco (Kerista Village). it also has listings and articles on other groups and individuals elsewhere doing other alternative centers and experiments. Right now we've subtitled our magazine “A Journal of the World's Best-Kept Secret” because so few people have ever heard of what we, or our friends and associates, are doing. But -- we've discovered two very important facts. 1) A very high percentage of those relatively few people who have read Utopian Eyes [U.E.] have been profoundly and positively influenced by it. Quite a few members of Kerista Village found their way here through reading U.E.; many people in other groups have made initial contact with their current communal family partners via U. E. ; still others have been excited. stimulated, and charged with renewed optimism by it. 2) Owners and managers of many “outlets" (stores, libraries. co-ops, coffee houses. etc.) are very happy to give away complimentary (free) copies of U.E. to customers. They know it contains good ideas and information; that it helps people find each other; and it's a nice premium. (We’ve discovered this locally, in the San Francisco Bay Area, and all over the country where our caravans have visited.) Now. put this all together and you can begin to see what we’re getting at. We'd like to get complimentary copies of U.E. distributed from every single outlet that is willing to carry them, because there's no telling when or where a person will pick one up, take it home. open it . . . and sud- denly have that EUREKA! experience. We can't do it all ourselves, from here in San Francisco. And so, we're hoping you’ll help us in this plan . . . by be- coming a Utopian Eyes distribution agent. This means talking to your local storekeepers, librarians, or co-op committee, telling them what this idea and publication are about, and asking them if you can supply them with some amount of U.E.s each issue to distribute to their customers. (The amount would be as many as they can comfortably handle.) We can supply you, free of charge, with as many copies of the magazine as you request for the outlets you’ll be servicing. What's in this for you? What’s in it for us is obvious . . . we're looking for more commune members, and exposure to our magazine is one of the best ways we have to find them. We’re also dedicated to the ideal of bringing people together as friends and partners «- “Utopian matchmaking” -- in other places, whether as Keristans starting their own centers or as non-Keristans doing anything else communal or cooperative, Helping people meet and make new friends makes us feel good. make a few more real, deep friends? Or even a lot of them? As a U.E. distribution agent, you’ll have something around which to make new friends like you've never had before. There's nothing like ideal-based friendships, and we'll vouch for that. U. E. is the perfect “text” or reference material from which to start a Utopian study group or informal rap group of any kind. And, what's more, any group, center or activity you become involved with connected to Utopian ideals will be described in the magazine . . . so you’ll actually be distrib- uting your own flyer. Of course, you might want to do this out of the sheer goodness of your heart, or as a hobby, or to keep busy (although it won't actually take too much time) . . . but there's no harm having a personal investment in the energy output, either. All you’ll have to do is open up your local outlets by talking to the right people (you can even give them this notice to read), tell us how many copies of each issue you’ll need, stamp the magazines we send you “complimentary”, take them to the outlets and see that they're placed where people will see them. and let us know how it’s going. We'd suggest you start with one box (250 copies) and then let us know if you need more. (Remember, they’re good for three months.) Some of our friends who have been doing this out of a small town in Oregon are able to distribute thousands! So -- Whaddya think? is it a deal? We hope you'll take us up on this opportunity to put a little of your time and energy into something that can improve the quality of all our lives. ‘It's easy to get an ink pad and a rubber stamp saying “COMPLIMENTARY” at an omce supply store. If you can’! find such a stamp, you can have one made; if you can't do either for some reason, let us know and we'll help out. Send in this coupon . . . and, we'd enjoy hearing from you personally as well. YES! l'd like to be a distribution agent for Utopian Eyes in my area. Please send me boxes of the current issue. A five-part Ieaming series for government and military personnel. This is a proposal by Abacus, Inc., a woman-owned small business to produce this learning program for the government. People who understand their ideology can defend it philosoph- ically. How can people have the will to defend a way of life militarily if they don’t defend it philosophically? We, at Abacus. produce learning programs on the structure of demo- cratic society. We use these pro- grams in our own storefront class- room. We want to contract with the government to produce ideological training programs in print for govern- ment and military personnel. We have blocked out a series of five learning programs on the five main issues of political science. This is very important because the five main issues of political science clearly establish the moral impera- tive of having a democratic republic over a totalitarian dictatorship. We believe that because we are a grass- roots coalition of freelance artists and writers, we are capable of communicating this to people from any ethnic, economic or cultural background. The series can be produced for the government for It will cover the following: 1. The Coverage of Citizenship: Because we are associated within the state, we must stand in some kind of relation to one another. What is that to be? Should all of us be placed on an equal footing or not? This first issue is a choice between equality and inequality. 2. The Functions of the State: Originating for mutual protection, the state has traditionally widened its sphere of action. ls there a limit to what the state is justified in undertaking? If a limit appears necessary, where should it be set? 3. The Source of Authority: If the distribution of power within the state is visualized as a pyramid, the government can be likened to its apex, and the remainder of the people to the base. Authority can then be imagined either to stem from the base and travel up to the apex or to originate in the apex and flow down to the base. Under the first view, the government is controlled by, and is responsible to, the people. Under the second, the people are subjects to those who govern, and are duty—bound to obey their com- mands. At issue here is the choice between freedom and dictatorship. Show less
